Social media management is an increasingly in-demand service that we, and other PR firms, offer. Knowing which social media channels to use is one hurdle, which we’ve previously touched on here, but finding managing multiple platforms for multiple clients is another.
It can be hugely time-consuming to think of creative content to post across all channels for different clients. Not only this, but to spend the time adjusting the content across the platforms is a difficult task in itself. For Instagram, it’s necessary to think of creative but commonly-used hashtags, for Twitter, the character count is your worst enemy, and on Facebook, finding the right balance of humorous to factual is a struggle.
Software such as Hootsuite offer the ability to manage all the platforms from one place. However, Hootsuite has had issues with imagery on Facebook, which greatly impacts performance on that platform. Also, between reporting costs and upgrades to the team or business plan, Hootsuite can easily come in over £7,000 per year. These costs might be a drop in the ocean to some businesses, but to others, it can be business-critical.

- Plan Plan Plan. Getting ahead of yourself is the best way to prevent any last-minute panics. Look at a yearly calendar of events, make a note of dates such as Halloween as well as days like ‘National Puppy Day’, or anything that might be applicable to your client. Make a note of these on a calendar dedicated to social media and create posts that celebrate these events. There is an in-platform scheduling feature in Facebook, and TweetDeck allows you to schedule tweets ahead of time, allowing you to get ahead of the game.
- Stay on top of the news. Although planning ahead of time covers you on a day-to-day basis, it’s necessary to keep an eye on the news, especially if you’re posting anything that might be affected by any breaking news. Stay ahead of the news and edit any pre-scheduled posts appropriately.
- Stay up to date with specific company events. Help to diversify what you’re posting about on social media by posting pictures and statements about any team events that might be held. Encourage your clients to let you know about any parties, social events or gatherings that are planned throughout the year, so you can schedule posts to go live when they’re happening.
- If in doubt, outsource. Although we’ve tried to collate our advice to help you get on top of your social media, it is still a hugely time-consuming part of any business management.
